Welcome, adventurer, to Poseidon's Rising Expanded Edition, a tabletop game of seafaring adventure and exploration for 2-6 players. In this article you will learn how to play the game. The following section contains an overview of the rules; for a more detailed explanation please see the "Rules Reference" booklet included in the game box.

The goal of Poseidon's Rising is to be the first player to achieve ten fame points by completing various objectives during your voyages. Fame points can be earned in a variety of ways, including discovering new islands, establishing colonies and trading goods.

To begin the game, each player selects one of the six colored crews and takes the corresponding ship miniature and player board. The player boards represent your ship's hold, where you will store your crew, cargo and supplies. Each player also takes one fame point token and places it on the 0 space of their fame track.

The game is played over four rounds, called voyages. During each voyage, players will take turns performing different actions until all players have passed. The following is a summary of the actions available during a player's turn:

1) Draw two cards from the deck and discard one. This action allows you to gain new resources or goods to help you on your voyage, or get rid of cards that are no longer useful. 2) Play an Event card. Event cards can be used to perform various actions such as exploring new islands, acquiring new crew members or gaining extra fame points. 3) Move your ship around the board. You may move up to two spaces per turn, but cannot end your movement on an island unless you are exploring it. 4) Explore an island. To explore an island, you must move your ship onto it and then discard a card from your hand. If the discarded card matches one of the symbols on the island, you discover its treasure and earn fame points accordingly (see "Island Exploration" below). 5) Establish a colony. To establish a colony, you must first move your ship onto an unoccupied island and then discard three cards from your hand (one for each colony). If at least two of the discarded cards match two different symbols on the island, you claim it as yours and earn fame points accordingly (see "Colony Establishment" below). 6) Trade goods with other players. To trade goods with another player, move your ship onto their ship and then discard two cards from your hand (one for each good traded). The other player then chooses one card from their hand to give to you in return (see "Trade Goods" below). 7) Resting Your Crew - At any time during your turn you may rest your entire crew by discarding four cards from your hand instead of performing any other action (except moving your ship). This will allow them to recover health lost during previous encounters with sea monsters or enemies ashore. 8) Play an Ability card - Ability cards can be used to perform various special actions such as stealing goods from other players or reducing the cost of resting your crew. 9) Pass - If you do not wish to perform any of these actions, you may pass instead. When all players have passed in succession, round 1 ends and a new round begins (see "Voyages" below for more information).

When exploring an island or establishing a colony, if at least two of the discarded cards match two different symbols on the island tile being explored/claimed then you discover its treasure/colony respectively and earn fame points as indicated on the tile itself:

1 point for every 4 gold coins discovered 1 point for every 3 food items discovered 1 point for every 2 tools discovered 1 point for every 1 barrel of rum discovered
5 points for every 5 colonists settled in a colony

The amount of fame gained from establishing colonies is doubled if at least three matching symbols arediscarded when founding a colony
